Meet Your District 1 Director Candidates:

Peggy Kuettel, Incumbent and CLP President:

Peggy is a graduate of Central High in Superior, Wisconsin, and went on to attend Wisconsin State University and the University of Minnesota, Duluth. She resides on Barrs Lake, and was instrumental in starting the Town of North Star in 1985. She served on the North Star Town Board for 18 years, and acted as Chairperson for 12 years. She served the North Star Fire Department for 8 years as a Firefighter and a First Responder.

Peggy has committed 30 years to the electric co-op industry. She has held critical roles at Co-op Light & Power (CLP), Great River Energy (GRE), and the Minnesota Rural Electric Association (MREA). As your elected representative, Peggy has completed numerous co-op specific courses including Basic Director Training, Co-op Credentialed Director Training, and the series of Board Leadership Courses.

Peggy has held all officer roles on the CLP Board, and is currently the President. She has utilized her voice at GRE to ensure the small co-ops, like CLP, are treated equally. She chaired the Generation, Transmission, and Power Supply Committees, gaining a broad perspective on an exceedingly complex and changing industry. At MREA, she was the first female to be elected to the board and helped shape both state and federal legislation that kept rural electric rates stable.

When asked why she is running for re-election, Peggy states, “Because I care.” “Balancing reliable service, affordable rates, and environmental stewardship is a complicated task. We have the right team in place to make it happen, and I want to help see our current strategic initiatives through.”

Gene Wolfe

Gene is a native of northeastern Minnesota.  He graduated from William Kelley High School in Silver Bay, MN.  He attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. where he graduated Magna Cum Laude majoring in history and religion.

Gene has worked in the financial services industry for 30 years.  He is currently the Managing Director of Lakeside Advisors, an independent financial advisory firm.  He and his partner, Alan Anderson of Two Harbors, MN. work with clients in the areas of investment management, retirement, business, and estate planning.

He has lived at his current address on Little Alden Lake since 2005.  He is married to Sydnie Wolfe (Judkins).  In their free time, Gene and Syd enjoy skiing (Nordic and Alpine), golf, boating, and mountain biking.

As to why he is running for director of District 1, Gene states, “We are fortunate to live in northern Minnesota with its clean air and water, forests, lakes, and rivers.  If elected, I would work to provide increased reliability of the CLP power systems. I also believe it is critical, in this time of rapid change in the energy business, to provide members of CLP with the most efficient and cost effective energy available.  Finally, I believe that the Board of Directors should enact term limits for directors.  I would be in favor of a maximum of three terms of three years each.”
